Amerikaanse fotojournalist gearresteerd in China

A U.S. photojournalist was believed to have been detained in a southern Chinese village, where riot police freed officials held hostage by residents protesting the arrest of an anti-corruption activist, the photographer's father said Sunday.

The freelance journalist, Danfung Dennis, 25, sent his sister a text message on Saturday night saying that residents were hiding him in Dongzhou, a village in Guangdong province, his father, John Dennis, told The Associated Press.

Susan N. Stevenson, a spokeswoman at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, said the U.S. Consulate in the southern city of Guangzhou was looking into the report but has not been able to confirm it.

The journalist called his sister, who lives in Beijing, on Sunday morning and said he thought that police were about to detain him and that she should notify the U.S. Embassy, the father said, adding that his son has not been answering his mobile phone.

"We also called the hotel where he said he was going to stay. They said they were expecting him back at 1 a.m. but he didn't turn up," said the father, who called the AP's bureau in Hong Kong from Ithaca, N.Y.

"We really have no idea where he is," he said, adding that Danfung has done freelance work for the New York Times, but that his son didn't say who sent him to cover the protest. Danfung has also done freelance work for The Associated Press.

AP reporters called two cell phone numbers used by Danfung. Both phones were switched off, though earlier one phone was on.

Update dinsdag: Danfung Dennis vrijgelaten>

A freelance photojournalist from Ithaca is free after being detained in China. Danfung Dennis, 25, says he was held for about 12 hours while covering a land dispute in a village in southern China.

Dennis was covering the story of Chinese officials who had been taken hostage by villagers demanding the release of an anti-corruption activist.

He says police hit him in the head and injured his arm when he tried to use his cell phone. Dennis says he's concerned about the safety of villagers who tried to help him.
